This 12 week program is broken down into different key areas that focus on building your repertoire of skills and experience. Your time will be split between intensive practical and theoretical training, gaining world-recognised guiding qualifications, plus experience in the adventure tourism industry. All this will give you the best entry into the outdoor industry possible, or simply an advanced skill set for becoming a more confident outdoor adventurer.


This program gains participants the following guiding qualifications:

  • Industry Standard Trekking Leader
  • Industry Standard Rock Climbing Supervisor 
  • Pure Exploration Certificate of Guiding
  • International Wilderness First Aid certification
  • Swift Water River Rescue Level 1 Certificate

While this is an Adventure Guide Program, it's not all about the outdoors and outdoor pursuits. There will be cultural activities and exchange; sightseeing and touring; personal development; community and social events; free time and plenty of opportunity for exploration.  


Whether you are looking for a stepping stone into the adventure tourism career pathway as a guide, or just an awesome educational opportunity to live in the most amazing places on earth, the Pure Exploration Adventure Guide Program is an epic, constructive, and rewarding way to spend 3 months in the West! 


If you love the outdoors, you’ll love the Southwest. Known for it’s surreal geological features, vast landscapes and rad adventures, you’ll never want to leave. Utah is home to several of America’s favorite national parks often referred to as the Mighty 5, making this state the perfect place to begin our Western adventure.


Zion National Park, was established in 1919 and was Utah’s first official nature reserve. Renowned for its steep red cliffs, Zion offers delight for hikers and climbers alike. Get ready to explore the depths and the heights of this expansive 2,000ft deep canyon while gaining crucial outdoors skills. Nearby you’ll find Arches, Bryce, Canyonlands and Capital Reef National Parks, for some breath-taking options for exploration in your downtime!

Note spaces on this program are extremely limited. Most of our candidates apply 8-12 months in advance of start date. 


A diverse and exciting program designed to keep everyone interested and busy throughout their stay, balancing plenty of action, learning, social and free time. 


Time for an introduction to the disciplines that will become your bread and butter for the next eight weeks. You’ll get an in-depth briefing and training on hiking and guiding, giving you the core skills needed for the training ahead. Not to mention exploring some stunning local sights along the way!

You’ll begin developing technical skills in navigation and bushwalking, day hikes, overnight hikes, bushcraft, interpretation, flora and fauna.

As your intro to Rock climbing we cover top-roping, abseiling, safety, equipment, intro to lead climbing, systems, transitions. 

We’ll build on your existing knowledge of equipment, weather, and nutrition, then introduce you to essential training in group management, risk analysis, and leadership. 


It’s time to start putting your skills and knowledge to the test, as we start to push your limits and see if we can create some outdoor diamonds!


At this point of the program, we take it up a notch. It’s time to test your limits and push those new skills. We take you to a few more challenging locations where you’ll have to pull together as a team to get through, and where you’ll really start to see the value in ensuring processes are followed and back-up plans are in place!

Bush modules include Multi-day hikes, trip planning, practicing leading and getting mileage for your logbook

Rock modules include consolidation and practice of skills learnt in module 1 and 2 and incorporating leading others. 

At the end of this module, you will have received training to satisfy supervisor and leader qualifications in the above two disciplines

WEEKS 9-12: Assessment & Leadership days


As well as completing your 2 x disciplines to an exam passing standard, you’ll also complete a Wilderness First Aid and Swift Water Rescue certifications! 


Fill up your logbook with leading or assistant-leading your peers for hiking and climbing excursions. Get some real experience with what it takes to plan, risk assess and successfully lead a day expedition


Buckle down and consolidate your learning in preparation for your leader assessments. We’ve had a fantastic pass rate so far of 98%, so as long as you do the hours and are fit and healthy and raring to go, you’ll be sweet!


We know that 3 months may sound like a long time to be training and exploring. But what’s great about this program is that every week is different. Your time will be split between a range of activities, to ensure you have all the technical skills and experience needed to succeed, but also enough time to chill, sleep in, visit local restaurants, grab some gear and go practice your new skills on your own or with your mates etc.

Each week will include*

  • 5 days of Technical Training
  • 1 day of Self-Directed Learning
  • 1 day for Admin or as Free Day

*The order of days will change each week and as your training progresses. This is simply a general outline.
